The Tesla Van: Is Elon Finally Building Something “Cooler Than a Minivan”?
By Our EV Tech Correspondent | March 2026
Tesla Van
If you’ve ever stood in a supermarket car park in Slough, watching a sliding door slowly retract on a diesel Vauxhall Vivaro and thought, "This needs more stainless steel and a distinct lack of a steering wheel," then 2026 might finally be your year.
For nearly a decade, the Tesla Van has been the Loch Ness Monster of the EV world: frequently "spotted" in grainy renders, discussed in hushed tones on Reddit, and occasionally "confirmed" by a midnight post from Elon Musk. But the signal is finally drowning out the noise. Following a flurry of activity at Giga Texas and the fallout from the "We, Robot" event, the dream of a Tesla-branded people-mover is looking less like vapourware and more like an imminent UK reality.
The "Cooler Than a Minivan" Mystery
Let’s be honest: "Cooler than a minivan" is a remarkably low bar to clear. Currently, the peak of minivan coolness is having a built-in vacuum cleaner or enough cup holders to hydrate a small infantry division. Traditionally, the minivan is the white flag of motoring—the moment you admit that aerodynamics have been replaced by ISOFIX points.
Tesla’s approach to the Tesla Van seems to be split into two distinct camps:
The Robovan
The futuristic, Art Deco-inspired shuttle that looks like a high-speed toaster from the year 2099. Designed to carry 20 people with zero driver required.
The CyberVan
A rugged, 7-to-9 seater family powerhouse using the Cybertruck's stainless steel exoskeleton. This is the one for the school run from hell.
UK-Specific Specs
In the UK, the electric van market is currently dominated by the Ford E-Transit and the VW ID. Buzz. While the ID. Buzz has the retro charm, it lacks the range for a proper British road trip to the Highlands without three charging stops. Here is how the Tesla Van is rumoured to stack up:
| Feature | Rumoured Tesla Van | Standard UK EV Van |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 400+ Miles | ~200 Miles |
| Vibe | Blade Runner Space Station | School Run / Delivery Driver |
| Tech | Full Self-Driving (Unsupervised) | Parking Sensors (if you're lucky) |
| Doors | Automatic Falcon Wings | Squeaky Sliding Metal |
The Tech: Bioweapons & 48 Volts
Expect the Tesla Van to inherit the 48-volt architecture from the Cybertruck, meaning thinner wiring and more cabin space. But the real winner for parents? Bioweapon Defence Mode. Essential for when the toddlers have had too much sugar and the internal air quality reaches hazardous levels.
We also expect Steer-by-Wire, allowing the dashboard to be pushed forward to create a "lounge" feel. Perfect for waiting at a rainy football practice in Manchester while watching Netflix on a 25-inch cinema screen.
