Aurs Road Update
If you regularly drive between Barrhead and Newton Mearns, we have some fantastic news that’s going to make your daily commute a whole lot easier. After a nearly 30-month closure, a few gray hairs, and an 18-month delay that felt like three different lifetimes, Aurs Road is officially reopening to traffic this Friday, May 29, 2026, at 10:00 AM.
Let's be honest, when the original 12-month timeline stretched into a whopping two-and-a-half-year saga, some of us started to wonder if they were building a runway for a space shuttle down by the reservoir, or if we'd all be driving flying cars by the time the tarmac finally set! Here at Paisley Autocare, we know exactly how much of a headache the seemingly endless diversions via Stewarton, Nitshill, and Darnley Road have been. We've all memorized every single pothole on the detour routes by now. But the agonizingly long wait is finally paying off. East Renfrewshire Council has completely transformed the route, and we wanted to give you a quick rundown of what to expect when you take your long-awaited first drive down the new and improved Aurs Road.
What’s New on Aurs Road?
The £28 million transformation wasn't just a simple patch-and-paint job. The project tackled that notoriously winding, narrow stretch of road and turned it into a modern, much safer route. Here is what you can look forward to (now that we're all two-and-a-half years older and wiser):
-
A Straighter, Safer Drive: The treacherous, winding single-carriageway has been straightened out to significantly improve visibility. You no longer need to hold your breath and pray when passing a bus!
-
New 30mph Speed Limit: To ensure the safety of drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike, a new 30 miles per hour speed limit has been introduced along the stretch between Barrhead and Newton Mearns. Source
-
Stunning Scenery & Active Travel: While the road itself opens this Friday, the project also includes an incredible new waterside promenade overlooking the Balgray Reservoir. A brand-new footpath, a segregated cycle lane, and a new car park are entering their final stages and will open to the public over the summer. Barrhead News

Better Connectivity: The upgraded road will restore a crucial transport link, meaning you finally get those precious 15 minutes of your morning back instead of navigating miles of detour.
The project faced its fair share of hurdles—from challenging ground conditions and unmapped utilities to an unexpected area of subsidence. Honestly, with an 18-month delay tacked onto the original schedule, we half expected them to announce they'd discovered an ancient Roman city or the Loch Ness Monster's summer home down there! But as the barriers are finally lifted this Friday, it's safe to say the long-term benefits to our local infrastructure will be well worth the wait.
