Hidden Costs of Owning a Private Registration

Hidden Costs of Owning a Private Registration - Paisley Autocare

Stuart Ross |

Owning a private registration plate in the UK isn't a one-time and one purchase. It's about more than just securing the plate and assigning it to your vehicle. There's also a lot that often goes unnoticed, especially for those buying on a whim or for the first time.

The thing is, the upfront purchase price rarely covers the true cost of getting private number plates. And this post is going to dive into exactly what some of these costs are.

Renewal Costs

While a private number plate does not require an annual renewal, plates held on retention certificates operate differently. A private number plate needs to be renewed every 10 years. Now, this renewal is free if it's done on time. However, if you don't renew on time, then you could forfeit the right to use the plate or face a cost to renew once the deadline has passed.

Retainment Fees

When you sell a car that has private plates, and you want to retain the plate for use on a new car, then you will face a fee for doing this. Selling the car with the plate on doesn't carry a charge, but transferring it to your name to use on a new car carries an £80 fee. It's not an ongoing cost; it's an administration cost and is payable each time you want to change the plate to a different car or vehicle.

Insurance and Documentation Adjustments

Ok, so this doesn't mean you pay more on your insurance if you have private plates. You are not considered to have an increased risk factor from the plate alone.

But where this matters is in the documentation for your vehicle, of which insurance is concerned. All of your details need to be correct and up to date, and this is where you can get caught out. You might invalidate your insurance coverage if you don't tell them you have changed your plates. The correct plate needs to appear on official documentation.

If you need to make a claim, if your vehicle gets flagged on ANPR cameras, if you're pulled over by the police, etc., not updating your registration to accommodate the private plate can put you at risk of fines or points on your licence and finding yourself without valid insurance. So while your insurance company won't increase your premium, you might get stung in other ways.

Market Value

Again, not an upfront fee or cost as such, but an important factor to keep in mind anyway. Buyers view private registrations as appreciating assets. But in reality, this isn't always true, and the value of your plate can and probably will fluctuate based on demand, buyer interest, and character combinations. Not all plates retain or increase in value. This matters if this is one of the sole reasons for getting one.

Sure, you can sell your registration, but again, this comes with fees for brokers, listing costs, or auction commissions. And if you're selling the vehicle with the plate on, you might find fewer interested buyers or narrower resale markets due to the plate. Both factors are potentially losing money.
