A very expensive barbecue at Southampton docks
More than £900,000 worth of Jaecoo vehicles have reportedly gone up in flames after a major fire broke out at a vehicle storage compound at Southampton docks.
The fire involved more than 30 Jaecoo vehicles, with reports suggesting the cars were newly arrived models waiting to be distributed to UK dealerships.
So, if you were patiently waiting for a shiny new Jaecoo to arrive at your local dealer, you may now be waiting a little longer. Unless, of course, you ordered yours in “crispy black”, in which case Southampton may have accidentally got ahead of the factory options list.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but the incident has certainly raised a few eyebrows — and probably a few insurance premiums.
What happened?
According to early reports, the fire broke out in the early hours at Southampton docks, where a number of Jaecoo vehicles were being stored.
Emergency services attended the scene, with multiple fire engines required to bring the blaze under control. Witnesses reported hearing explosions and car horns going off, which is exactly the kind of alarm clock nobody wants at 4am.
The vehicles involved are believed to have included Jaecoo electric or hybrid models, although the exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
And that part is important.
Before everyone jumps straight onto social media shouting “EVs are death traps” while charging their phone, laptop, smartwatch, vape and Bluetooth speaker at the same time, it is worth pointing out that investigators have not confirmed what caused the fire.
Were the batteries to blame?
At the moment, there is no confirmed cause of the Jaecoo fire.
Electric and hybrid vehicles do use high-voltage battery systems, and when something goes wrong with a lithium-ion battery, it can be more difficult to deal with than a standard vehicle fire. These fires can burn intensely, may reignite, and often require specialist handling.
However, not every fire involving an electric or hybrid vehicle is automatically caused by the battery.
Vehicle fires can start for many reasons, including:
- Electrical faults
- Transport damage
- External ignition sources
- Charging issues
- Impact damage
- Faulty components
- Storage or handling issues
In other words, it may be battery-related, it may not be. Until the official investigation is complete, anything else is just internet detective work — and we all know how reliable that can be.
Why this matters for drivers in Paisley, Renfrewshire and Glasgow
Electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming more common on UK roads, including here in Paisley, Renfrew, Hillington, Glasgow and across Renfrewshire.
That means garages need to be properly equipped and trained to deal with them. These vehicles are not just “normal cars with a big Duracell underneath”. They have high-voltage systems, battery control modules, charging systems, advanced diagnostics, ADAS technology and more sensors than a teenager’s TikTok account.
At Paisley Autocare, we work with modern petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles, carrying out diagnostics, servicing, repairs and inspections using proper equipment and procedures.
As cars become more advanced, guessing is no longer good enough. Warning lights, charging faults and electrical issues need to be checked properly — not ignored until the dashboard looks like Blackpool Illuminations.
Accident damage and EVs: why proper checks are important
One of the biggest concerns with electric and hybrid vehicles is what happens after an accident or impact.
Even if the vehicle looks fine from the outside, damage underneath the car or around the battery area can be serious. High-voltage components are often located beneath the vehicle, and impact damage can affect cables, battery casing, cooling systems and safety systems.
That is why it is important to get your vehicle checked after:
- A collision
- Kerb impact
- Undercarriage damage
- Flood damage
- Charging faults
- Battery warning lights
- Sudden electrical issues
- Any unusual smell, smoke or heat
We are not saying every bump turns your EV into a mobile firework display. But if your car has taken a hit and then starts acting strangely, it is worth having it inspected before it decides to audition for a fire safety training video.
Warning signs you should not ignore
Whether you drive a petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric vehicle, there are some warning signs that should always be taken seriously.
These include:
- Burning smells
- Smoke from the vehicle
- Battery or charging warning lights
- Unusual heat from the vehicle
- Loss of power
- Electrical faults
- Repeated charging interruptions
- Strange noises after an impact
- Warning messages on the dashboard
If you notice any of these, do not just clear the fault code and hope for the best. Modern vehicles are very good at telling you when something is wrong. Unfortunately, they are also very good at becoming expensive when ignored.
The future is electric — but it still needs maintained
There is no doubt that electric and hybrid vehicles are here to stay. They are becoming more affordable, more common and more practical for everyday drivers.
But like any vehicle, they still need proper maintenance.
EVs may not need oil changes in the same way as a petrol or diesel car, but they still have brakes, tyres, suspension, coolant systems, cabin filters, charging systems, batteries, software and safety systems that need checked.
Hybrid vehicles still have engines as well as electric systems, which means they often need both traditional servicing and high-voltage awareness.
So while the sales brochures may make EVs sound like they need nothing more than a plug and a positive attitude, the reality is slightly different.
