KIA EV5

Kia has been busy turning its SUV range into something that looks less “standard family crossover” and more “future-proof driveway statement”. The latest arrival is the KIA EV5, a fully electric family SUV designed to sit alongside the Sportage in the C-SUV segment, giving buyers the choice of petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and now full EV options.

For families, commuters, company car drivers and anyone who enjoys the idea of passing a fuel station without financially wincing, the KIA EV5 looks like a very serious bit of kit. It combines a long-range 81.4kWh battery, a practical five-seat SUV body, strong standard equipment and the kind of tech list that makes older cars look like they were operated by candlelight.

What is the KIA EV5?

The KIA EV5 is Kia’s new fully electric family SUV, similar in size to the Sportage but built as a dedicated EV. UK cars use Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform, better known as E-GMP, and all versions come with the same long-range 81.4kWh battery pack.

There are three versions:

KIA EV5 model Battery Power WLTP range
Air 81.4kWh 214bhp Up to 329 miles
GT-Line 81.4kWh 214bhp Up to 313 miles
GT-Line S 81.4kWh 214bhp Up to 313 miles

All three versions produce 214bhp and 295Nm of torque, with a 0–62mph time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 102mph.

KIA EV5 range and charging

The headline figure is strong: the KIA EV5 Air can manage up to 329 miles on a single charge, while the GT-Line and GT-Line S versions offer up to 313 miles. In normal human terms, that means Glasgow to Manchester with enough charge left to argue about where to stop for food.

Kia says the KIA EV5 can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes using DC fast charging. It also comes with an 11kW onboard charger for AC charging, with 10–100% charging possible in around 7 hours 20 minutes using an 11kW AC charger.

That makes it a practical option for daily use, longer trips and home charging, assuming you remember to plug it in. EV ownership is very clever, but sadly it has not yet fixed forgetfulness.

Practicality: the bit families actually care about

The KIA EV5 is not just about screens and futuristic lights. It has a properly useful boot, which is where family SUVs either win or expose themselves as lifestyle ornaments.

Boot space stands at 566 litres with the seats up, increasing to 1,650 litres with the rear seats folded. The second row folds completely flat, and Kia also includes a 44-litre front storage compartment, often called a frunk.

That means plenty of room for prams, shopping, suitcases, sports gear, school bags and all the random “essential” items children somehow require for a 12-minute journey.

Interior and technology

Inside, the KIA EV5 gets a wide digital cockpit setup with twin 12.3-inch screens and a 5.3-inch climate control screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth are standard across the range, while higher trims add features such as a 360-degree surround view monitor, blind-spot view monitor, head-up display and Harman Kardon sound system.

The GT-Line and GT-Line S models also gain Vehicle-to-Load capability, allowing the car to power external devices. In practical terms, that means camping gear, laptops, tools or, in true UK fashion, possibly a kettle. Because no matter how advanced cars become, the country still runs on tea.

Safety and driver assistance

Kia has packed the KIA EV5 with a strong list of driver assistance systems. Standard safety technology includes Smart Cruise Control 2.0, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist 2.0, Lane Follow Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Blind-spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Highway Driving Assist 2.0, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist and Safe Exit Warning.

GT-Line S versions go even further, adding features such as Remote Smart Parking Assist, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor and a 360-degree Surround View Monitor.

For a family SUV, this is exactly the sort of kit buyers want. Especially the parking aids, because modern car parks appear to have been designed for shopping trolleys rather than actual vehicles.

Servicing the KIA EV5

One of the key details for owners is the service interval. Kia states that the KIA EV5 requires servicing every two years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.

That is good news for drivers who want lower maintenance hassle compared with traditional combustion vehicles. However, EVs still need proper checks. Tyres, brakes, suspension, steering components, coolant systems, air conditioning, cabin filters, diagnostics and software-related checks all still matter.

At Paisley Autocare, we support modern vehicle maintenance, including servicing, diagnostics and repairs for electric and hybrid vehicles. EVs may have fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars, but they are not magical self-healing spaceships. They still need looked after properly.

KIA EV5 warranty

The KIA EV5 comes with Kia’s seven-year/100,000-mile warranty, while the high-voltage battery pack is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty. Kia also includes 12 months of complimentary roadside assistance.

That warranty package will be a big selling point for buyers considering their first electric SUV, especially those still nervously asking, “But what happens if the battery goes?” every time EVs are mentioned.

Is the KIA EV5 a good family EV?

On paper, yes. The KIA EV5 looks like a very well-rounded electric SUV. It has strong range, a big boot, fast charging, lots of standard equipment and enough technology to keep most families happy.

It also avoids one of the biggest EV problems: being interesting but useless. Some electric cars look amazing until you realise the boot fits one overnight bag and a packet of crisps. The KIA EV5 appears to be aimed at real families, real luggage and real UK roads.

Final thoughts from Paisley Autocare

The KIA EV5 could be one of Kia’s most important electric models yet. It brings EV power into a practical family SUV package, with enough range for long-distance driving and enough space for everyday life.

For Paisley drivers considering the switch to electric, the KIA EV5 is definitely one to watch. It offers the familiar SUV practicality people love, but with electric running costs, modern tech and a design that looks like it has come from a future where potholes hopefully no longer exist.

And remember, whether you drive petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric, Paisley Autocare can help keep your vehicle safe, maintained and road-ready. Because even the smartest EV still needs tyres, brakes, checks and someone who knows what they are doing.
