The 1,461km Range-Extender SUV That Could Shake Up the European Market

Xiaomi may be best known in the UK for smartphones, smart home technology and electronics, but its rapidly growing car division is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The latest arrival is the Xiaomi SkyNomad N70 – a large, technology-packed five-seat SUV with up to 505km of electric range and a petrol range extender that takes its claimed combined range as high as 1,461km.

Xiaomi SkyNomad N70 – Xiaomi's new five-seat extended-range electric SUV.

At a glance: The SkyNomad N70 is a large five-seat extended-range electric vehicle. The N70 Max combines a 76kWh battery with dual electric motors and a petrol-powered generator, providing a claimed 505km electric range and up to 1,461km of combined range under China's CLTC testing cycle.

What Is the Xiaomi SkyNomad N70?

The SkyNomad N70 forms part of Xiaomi's new generation of large, comfort-focused SUVs and sits beneath the larger seven-seat SkyNomad N90.

Whereas cars such as the Xiaomi SU7 are focused heavily on pure-electric performance, the N70 takes a slightly different approach.

It uses what's known as an Extended Range Electric Vehicle, or EREV, powertrain.

In normal use, the electric motors drive the wheels. A 1.5-litre petrol engine sits under the bonnet, but rather than operating like the engine in a conventional petrol car, its primary purpose is to generate electricity when the battery charge becomes low.

The idea is simple: provide the smoothness and instant response of an EV while reducing the range anxiety associated with long journeys.

It's a Big SUV

Despite being the smaller vehicle in the SkyNomad SUV range, the N70 is still a substantial car.

Measurement Xiaomi SkyNomad N70
Length 4,960mm
Width 1,998mm
Height Approx. 1,765–1,785mm depending on version
Wheelbase 2,950mm
Seats 5
Wheel Sizes 19-inch or 21-inch

At almost five metres long and two metres wide, the N70 sits firmly in large premium-SUV territory.

Xiaomi has used that footprint to create a spacious two-row cabin rather than squeezing in a third row of seats.

How Does the Range-Extender System Work?

The N70 uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine as a range extender alongside a sizeable high-voltage battery.

When sufficient battery charge is available, the vehicle can operate much like a normal battery-electric vehicle. Once additional energy is required, the petrol engine can generate electricity and allow the journey to continue.

Important: Xiaomi's headline range figures are quoted using China's CLTC test cycle. CLTC figures should not be directly compared with official UK or European WLTP figures. Xiaomi has not yet published an official UK WLTP figure for the N70.

The N70 Max Is the One That Gets Really Interesting

The headline model is the SkyNomad N70 Max.

Its 76kWh battery is unusually large for a range-extender vehicle. In fact, its battery capacity isn't far removed from what you would find in some fully electric cars.

Xiaomi claims the Max can travel as far as 505km – approximately 314 miles – on battery power alone under the CLTC test cycle.

Once the battery requires assistance, the 1.5-litre petrol range extender can generate electricity and increase the claimed total driving range to 1,461km – around 908 miles.

That combination potentially allows owners to complete most everyday journeys using electricity while still having petrol available for much longer journeys.

416hp and All-Wheel Drive

The N70 Max uses two electric motors – one at the front and another at the rear – producing a combined output of approximately 310kW, or around 416hp.

Xiaomi quotes a 0-100km/h time of approximately 5.5 seconds, which is quick for a large family-focused SUV weighing well over two tonnes.

Top speed is approximately 190km/h – 118mph.

Xiaomi SkyNomad N70 dashboard and front interior

A Very Xiaomi Interior

If you've ever used one of Xiaomi's phones or smart-home products, the technology-focused approach to the N70 probably won't come as a surprise.

The centre of the dashboard is dominated by a large 16.1-inch 3K touchscreen, accompanied by a digital instrument display and large head-up display.

The infotainment system forms part of Xiaomi's HyperOS ecosystem, further blurring the line between a modern vehicle and the company's wider range of connected technology.

DISPLAY

16.1-inch Central Screen

A large high-resolution central display controls many of the N70's vehicle and entertainment functions.

DRIVER

Head-Up Display

A large head-up display allows key driving information to be projected into the driver's field of view.

SOFTWARE

Xiaomi HyperOS

Xiaomi's connected software ecosystem forms a major part of the vehicle's infotainment and smart-cabin experience.

COMFORT

Premium Cabin Features

Higher-spec versions offer extensive ambient lighting, rear controls, large tables and other features designed around passenger comfort.

A Cabin Designed to Change Layout

One of the most interesting elements of the SkyNomad range is Xiaomi's focus on interior flexibility.

The vehicle uses a largely flat floor and extended seat rails, allowing the seats to be repositioned depending on how the vehicle is being used.

Xiaomi describes the SkyNomad family as an “intelligent, reconfigurable, spacious SUV”, with the platform designed to support different seating and living arrangements.

Moving the second row rearwards can create a huge amount of passenger space – up to approximately 1,410mm in the most spacious configuration.

It's Almost Trying to Be a Living Room on Wheels

Modern Chinese luxury vehicles have increasingly focused on making the rear cabin as important as the driver's seat, and the SkyNomad N70 follows that trend.

Depending on specification, the N70 can offer features such as rear entertainment, folding tables, extensive ambient lighting and a built-in refrigerator.

The Max model has also been shown with a rear passenger control display, allowing occupants to adjust various cabin functions without reaching for the main central screen.

What About Boot Space?

A five-seat layout means Xiaomi has been able to prioritise luggage space as well as rear passenger comfort.

The flexible interior can be reconfigured for larger loads, and folding the rear seats creates a substantial flat cargo area.

That makes the N70 particularly interesting as a family SUV, where the ability to carry passengers comfortably during the week and larger loads at weekends can be more useful than outright performance.

LiDAR and NVIDIA-Powered Driver Assistance

Technology isn't restricted to the infotainment system.

Higher-spec versions of the N70 feature a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor alongside cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors.

The system is supported by an NVIDIA DRIVE Thor-U processor offering up to approximately 700 TOPS of computing performance.

Xiaomi uses this hardware as part of its HAD assisted-driving platform, supporting advanced driver-assistance functions on suitable roads.

As with any assisted-driving technology, these systems should not be confused with fully autonomous driving and their functionality can differ significantly depending on local legislation and market specification.

Safety Has Clearly Been a Major Focus

Xiaomi says the SkyNomad range uses its new Kunlun safety architecture, including an armour-cage-style body structure and extensive use of high-strength materials.

The N70 has also been reported with nine airbags, while Xiaomi states that the wider SkyNomad platform has been engineered around demanding multi-directional collision standards.

How Much Does the Xiaomi SkyNomad N70 Cost?

China Pricing

SkyNomad N70 Pro:
RMB 209,900 – approximately £23,700 at current exchange rates.

SkyNomad N70 Max:
RMB 239,900 – approximately £27,000 at current exchange rates.

Those figures make the N70 particularly interesting when compared with large premium SUVs from established European manufacturers.

However, the Chinese retail price should not be viewed as an indication that the N70 would cost £24,000 in Britain.

Any future UK model would have to account for transport, homologation, taxation, tariffs, distribution, warranty support and other costs.

Can You Buy the Xiaomi SkyNomad N70 in the UK?

Not officially – at least not yet.

As of October 2026, Xiaomi Auto does not officially sell the SkyNomad N70 through a UK dealer network.

Xiaomi has made clear that Europe forms part of its international expansion plans, but a confirmed UK launch date and UK specification for the N70 have not been announced.

This is important because a vehicle built for the Chinese domestic market isn't automatically equivalent to a future European model. Software, charging compatibility, driver-assistance systems, type approval and equipment specifications could all differ.

Thinking about importing one? A privately imported vehicle can introduce additional considerations including vehicle approval, registration, insurance, charging compatibility, parts availability, warranty support, software language and future servicing.

Could the SkyNomad N70 Work in the UK?

On paper, it could be very well suited to British motorists who like the idea of an electric vehicle but regularly travel longer distances.

A large battery means many drivers could potentially complete everyday commuting almost entirely on electricity, while the petrol range extender provides additional flexibility for longer journeys.

That could be especially attractive for drivers who don't want to plan every motorway journey around rapid-charging locations.

The bigger question is how the vehicle would be priced, supported and specified if it officially reaches the UK.

Is an EREV Better Than a Plug-In Hybrid?

Although the two technologies may sound similar, their approach is different.

Typical Plug-In Hybrid SkyNomad N70-Style EREV
Primary Drive Petrol engine and electric motor Electric motors
Petrol Engine Can directly drive the vehicle Primarily generates electricity
Battery Size Usually relatively small Much larger – up to 76kWh in N70 Max
Electric Range Generally designed for shorter journeys Up to 505km CLTC claimed
Long-Distance Backup Petrol engine Petrol-powered electricity generator

Our View: One of Xiaomi's Most Interesting Cars Yet?

The SkyNomad N70 arguably makes more sense for everyday motorists than a headline-grabbing high-performance EV.

The N70 Max provides a huge battery, four-wheel drive, more than 400hp, substantial passenger space and the ability to continue travelling using its petrol range extender.

It's also another example of just how quickly Chinese manufacturers are changing the expectations surrounding vehicle technology.

Features that were recently associated with expensive luxury cars – enormous displays, advanced driver assistance, rear entertainment, intelligent cabin controls and highly flexible interiors – are rapidly appearing further down the price range.

Whether the SkyNomad N70 itself eventually reaches UK showrooms remains unanswered, but vehicles like it demonstrate the direction the industry is heading.
